چکیده

This work aimed at demonstrating, first, that na€ıve reasoners are able to infer the existence of a relationship between two events that have never been presented together and, second, the sensitivity of such inference to the causal structure of the task. In all experiments, naive participants judged the strength of the causal link between a cue A and an outcome O in a first phase and between a second cue B and the same outcome O in a second phase. In the final test, participants estimated the degree of correlation between the two cues, A and B. Participants perceived the two cues as significantly more highly correlated when they were effects of a common potential cause (Experiment 1a and 2) than when they were potential causes of a common effect (Experiment 1b and 2). This effect of causal directionality on inferred correlation points out the influence of mental models on human causal detection and learning, as proposed by recent theoretical models. 2003 Elsevier Inc. Real-Time intrusion detection alert correlation and attack scenario extraction based on the prerequisite consequence approach

Alert correlation systems attempt to discover the relations among alerts produced by one or more intrusion detection systems to determine the attack scenarios and their main motivations. In this paper a new IDS alert correlation method is proposed that can be used to detect attack scenarios in real-time. The proposed method is based on a causal approach due to the strength of causal methods in ...

Information-Theoretic Implications of Classical and Quantum Causal Structures

Inferring causal relationships from empirical data is one of the main goals of science. To that aim a simple but crucial observation is that the correlations that can be observed between a set of variables depend on the causal structure underpinning them. Within that context, during the past year we have developed and formalized a new research program for the study of causal relations between c...

Inferring Unobserved Category Features With Causal Knowledge

One central function of categories is to allow people to infer the presence of features that cannot be directly observed. Although the effect of observing past category members on such inferences has been considered, the effect of theoretical or causal knowledge about the category has not. We compared the effects of causal laws on feature prediction with the effects of the inter-feature correla...

Abductive, Causal, and Counterfactual Conditionals Under Incomplete Probabilistic Knowledge

We study abductive, causal, and non-causal conditionals in indicative and counterfactual formulations using probabilistic truth table tasks under incomplete probabilistic knowledge (N = 80). We frame the task as a probability-logical inference problem. The most frequently observed response type across all conditions was a class of conditional event interpretations of conditionals; it was follow...

Disentangling interactions between adaptive divergence and gene flow when ecology drives diversification.

Adaptive diversification is driven by selection in ecologically different environments. In absence of geographical barriers to dispersal, this adaptive divergence (AD) may be constrained by gene flow (GF). And yet the reverse may also be true, with AD constraining GF (i.e. 'ecological speciation'). Both of these causal effects have frequently been inferred from the presence of negative correlat...
